Works on AT&T in my area. Will not work on Verizon anywhere. Don't know about any of the other carriers. Has to do with having a SIM card I think.
My wife and I have both used this phone for two months now and really like it.

Sorry, I tried to answer your question but I guess it didn't quite meet your needs. :( At least I tried, right?

If you research on both phones by doing some searching around the internet, you'll be able to compare features of both and make a decision based on your own research.

Good luck!

No front camera on the Extreme.

I also looked at the Exceed which is a CDMA phone that is sold for use directly through Verizon Wireless prepaid service. It's not a Straight Talk phone but is sold by Walmart to be used directly through Verizon. It will use Verizon's native network and service will be directly through Verizon.

The extreme (this phone) is a phone to be used through Straight Talk on the AT&T's GSM network. It will primarily use AT&T's towers.

A few of the major differences between the Exceed and the Extreme from what I noticed by quickly comparing them are (and I'm not 100% positive that I'm correct):

Exceed has a dual-core processor running a 1.2 GHz while the Extreme has a 800 GHz processor.

Exceed has both a front and back camera while the Extreme only has a rear camera.

Exceed has Gorilla Glass where the Extreme does not.

There seem to be other upgrades on the Exceed as it appears to be a newer product but even though it may cost less, you will pay quite a bit more for service than you would by using the Extreme on Straight Talk.

Question

How do I access WiFi hotspot? I fish and get way out sometimes.

asked 8 months ago
By
Charlie

Sorry my first response wasn't helpful.

Let's see if I can simplify a bit. If wherever you are fishing is within range of either a public wifi access point or an access point you have the password for, you will then be able to use this phone to access that signal. You have to have a signal. If there is no wifi signal where you are, then your phone will not be able to access the wifi hotspot.

If you are asking how to physically access a particular wifi hotspot with this phone if you do have an adequate signal, the instructions are given in the user's manual on page 22:

Wi-Fi

With Wi-Fi, you can use high-speed
Internet access within the coverage of the
wireless access point (AP). Enjoy wireless
Internet using Wi-Fi, without extra charges.

Connecting to Wi-Fi networks
To use Wi-Fi on your phone, you need
to access a wireless access point or
"hotspot". Some access points are open
and you can simply connect to them.
Others are hidden or use security features;
you must configure your phone to be able
to connect to them.

Turn off Wi-Fi when you're not using it to
extend the life of your battery.

NOTE:If you are out of the Wi-Fi zone
or set Wi-Fi to OFF, additional charges
may be applied by your mobile
operator for mobile data use.

Turning Wi-Fi on and connecting to a
Wi-Fi network:

1. Touch > Appstab > Settings
> Wi-Fifrom the WIRELESS &
NETWORKS:

2. Set Wi-Fito ONto turn it on and start
scanning for available Wi-Fi networks.

3. Tap Wi-Fi menu again to see a list of
active and in-range Wi-Fi networks.
*Secured networks are indicated by a
lock icon.

4. Touch a network to connect to it.
*If the network is open, you are asked
to confirm that you want to connect to
that network by touching Connect.
*If the network is secured, you are
prompted to enter a password or
other credentials. (Ask your network
administrator for details)

5. The status bar displays icon that
indicate Wi-Fi status.

If there is no public wifi where you fish, might be able to use your own phone if there is a cell signal with data. However, if you're way out in the middle of nowhere, there may not be a cell signal at all and then the phone will not work for voice or data service.

Even if there is a cell signal (AT&T), it may be just voice with no data if you're way out in the boonies. If that's the case, you'll be able to make a call but sometimes there is no data or the signal is not strong enough to use the internet.

There are two ways to use the internet on a smartphone. One is to pick up a wifi signal (either an open public wifi signal or a signal coming from your own router, i.e. home DSL, cable, etc. service and your own router). And the other is to pick up the internet through the phone itself using a 3G signal that your phone is picking up on its own (or 4G if you had the right phone and a 4G was available at your location).

Question

How do I become a wifi hotspot? Using my phone! No one else involved!

There is a step by step procedure that must be used to become the wifi hotspot. Anyone know how? Can you let me know the steps?

*lol* ...still not "helpful," eh?

Somebody else can give you the specific step by step procedure or instructions to turn your phone into a wifi hotspot. It's "illegal" and if Straight Talk finds out you are doing it (or using excessive data), your service can be terminated as it's against the Terms of Service you signed up under. If not terminated, they could severely throttle your data transmission speed.

Like I mentioned before, if you want to use a smartphone as a wifi hotspot, most of the contracted services will provide for that. For instance, Verizon allows it for their contracted service within your data allowance. Sprint and others allow it for an additional charge.

You'll have to check each carrier's terms. But again, Straight Talk does not allow you to use any of their phones as a wifi hotspot so I believe it's inappropriate for you to ask this question here as you're asking for somebody to give you instructions on how to do something that's not allowed.

Straight Talk prohibits using their phones as wifi hotspots. It is against their terms of service. If they find you are using the phone as a hotspot, they will terminate your service as you have agreed to their TOS when you register for service and their TOS explicitly prohibits using the phone as a hotspot.

As I said before, you can use your phone to access the internet if you have a cell signal in any given location. But accessing the internet and using data is for your phone only and it's not to be shared by using it as a hotspot. A hotspot is any device that is essentially acting as a router and allowing multiple connections. Straight Talk does not allow that.

If you want to use a phone as a hotspot --and it doesn't sound as that is what you want to do-- then you have to go to contracted service such as through Verizon where they do allow a smartphone to be used as a hotspot up to your data allowance. But it doesn't sound as if you want to be a hotspot.

To me, it sounds as if you just want to access the internet on your smartphone. If that's the case, you can do that as long as you have a cell signal that provides transmission of data. If you are out in the wilderness somewhere, you may not have that signal. Your phone may show "no signal" and therefore will not be able to access the internet. And you may not even be able to make or receive a voice call.

Yes, but be sure to read the Terms of Service as there is a LOT of controversy as to what constitutes "unlimited" data (web).

Some of the things that are prohibited by the TOS are, but not limited to, are continuous streaming, dedicated video feeds, tethering to other devices, sharing data by using your smartphone as a m-ifi hotspot, etc., etc.

Consuming unusual amounts of data could get your account flagged as "abusing" the unlimited feature of your plan. Although there are no definitive caps or specific thresholds used to define "abuse," using amounts of data that are substantially higher than than average could get your data usage scrutinized and monitored. If it continues on a consistent basis after being warned of excessive usage, your service could be terminated with no refund of the amount you've prepaid.
