Remove only the bump knob and bolt and then the spool will come off to be refilled. The outer spool is held on by a clip and need not be removed.

There is a retainer ring on the inside of the Outer Spool Assembly that needs to be removed in order to remove that assembly. It is not an easy task and will require patience and use of one or two small screwdrivers. Now with that said, If you are wanting to simply remove the spool itself to replace the string, grasp the housing and spin, counter clockwise, the bump head knob assembly which is located in the center of the spool. Once fully removed you may have to give the spool a slight twist to get it free and removed from the Outer Spool Assembly. Hope that helps.
