Question

Are iPhones sold for Straight Talk unlocked?

Yes...they are all unlocked. That's why you will pay the full device price for the phone. The fact that it works only on the ST network is a function of the SIM card in the phone at the time you buy it in a Walmart store.

The service provider is officially StraightTalk but the iPhone uses the AT&T network towers, including any LTE data capability if you are in an area with the AT&T high speed LTE network.

There is NO plan to use the Verizon network for the iPhones sold by Walmart through StraightTalk. If you own a Verizon or Sprint iPhone5 it has the capability, already, to use the AT&T network if you purchase a GSM SIM card from StraightTalk. The iPhone5 has both GSM/CDMA radios in it. Depending on the company from which it was originally sold the appropriate radio was initialized through their iOS software to use that radio. Verizon has already announced that it's iPhone5 is GSM unlocked. Sprint will unlock the GSM radio if you are a Sprint customer in good standing. TMobile, while a GSM based provider, operates its "4G" network on a different frequency than AT&T, so you'll only get the slower Edge network data. If/when TMobile gets an LTE network up and running you may be able to access that data network on an AT&T/Verizon/Sprint iPhone 5.

How is this better than getting the unlocked phone directly from Apple?

The pricing seems to be the same for the Iphone5 (649,749 and 849)

Same phone from Apple, same price, but you're getting an authorized, low-cost, non-contract service provider, for the first time. Imagine - as low as $40. month, unlimited talk-text-data (!), month-to-month, no taxes, no overages. Great for the recession.

It's not better. Apple sets the price. Get it from best buy, apple, radio shack, or the AT&T store. They will all work and be the same price. Each retailer makes a few bucks every time they sell one. Straight talk just want to make the money instead of the other guys. But it's all the same.

The iPhone 5 uses a nano sim card, AT&T supports this along with other AT&T compatible carrier such as StraightTalk. The phone is probably locked to AT&T, if not it can be used with a carrier such as T-Mobile but only with Edge data right now or soon with 4G.

can you use an at&t iphone with straight talk?

No, the AT&T iPhone is not unlocked. You would have to have it unlocked (if possible, not probable), then get a Straight Talk sim card. Could be costly. This phone is setup for Straight Talk/Tracfone prepaid monthly. Very easy to setup, no contracts, cheap, fast data. But you can't use this phone as a truly unlocked phone - you can't go to T-Mobile or so after you tire of Straight Talk.

answer 2
Yes, you can! You can even use it for data in the iPad I am answering this question on. No unlocking needed. Straight talk uses AT&T towers. You will need to get on a wifi once to download an APN changer (free) to get the Internet to work. And download YouMail for visual voice mail. If you just want to make calls just pop in a straight talk sim and it works fine. Be aware if you use to much data they will throttle you and if you keep using it they will shut off your data completely.

We had a Tracfone number and since Straight Talk is Tracfone, it took 5 seconds to transfer and 5 minutes to activate - for free. They said other cell numbers are tranferrable, but you must provide account number and pin numbers.

There is a one year warranty on the phone and additional coverage for hardware and support from Apple can be purchased. Go to iphone.straighttalk.com for the agreement.

Typically walmart.com offers a two-year 'Care Plan' at checkout on electronics purchases but it was not offered in my cart of I5.

The iphone made for the straight talk needs no sim. If you get an iphone from att, it requires a nano sim.

answer 3
Yes, it is correct. The iPhone 5 takes a nano sim. Apparently ST will have one available at some point but not yet. Therefore, you can do as I did and buy yourself a SIM card cutter. I cut my ST micro sim to a nano sim with ease. You can purchase one at Amazon for few bucks. Totally worth it and fool-proof. It's kinda like a hole puncher with templates. I hope this answers your question.

NO! This phone uses AT&T Towers. GSM and CDMA-V phones are the only ones that use Verizon Towers.

CDMA-S uses Sprint.
