do I have to maintain service every month?
I want to use this primarily when I go away from home,, sometimes there will be a couple months at a time when I don't need this and wouldn't want to buy a new card then not use it.. I read something about one of these that said "if you switch an existing phone nr. to straight talk, if you don't renew the service every month, they will take away your phone number".,, How much truth is in this statement??? sounds phony to me!!

With all straight talk phones if you don't renew the service every month your account will be deactivated. In order to use the phone again you will have to reactivate the phone and get a new number.
You are not required to maintain service continuously. There is no "termination fee" as this is prepaid service. There is also no re-activation fee nor will Straight Talk charge you to reactivate your service.
HOWEVER, yes, it is a true statement that if you let service lapse for more than 30-days, you will lose your phone number. In fact, I believe that the Terms and Conditions of Service state that one can lose their phone number immediately upon not renewing but all the Straight Talk reps I've spoken with about this tell me that Straight Talk gives a 30-day grace period before putting the number back into the pool of available numbers.
I checked with Straight Talk on this myself and they told me that there is no provision for one to pay extra or any other way to "reserve" your phone number when service is not active.
BTW, we do not "own" our phone numbers is what I've been told so we have no right to "keep" the number if we do not have service active with some provider.
