Questions & Answers for T-Mobile T-Mobile Pre-Paid Nokia Lumia 521 4G Smartphone

Question

TracFone

I currently have Safelink provided Government minutes on a Tracfone LG840G. The Sim Card came with the phone. Actual service for Tracfone is provided by AT&T.

Does anyone know if the 521 can be used with the Government provided minutes?
And if so, will WiFi calling minutes be deducted?

Thanks so much
A budget restricted consumer

I would assume not, since Tracfone is only usable on Tracfones. Walmart does have a plan that is government assisted for $30 a month. If this phone is usable with the Walmart network (run by Tmobile) it should work. I am waiting for my phone to see if it will work on the Walmart network.

No, it is sold for prepaid.
You may use an existing t-mobile sim card (micro, not mini) or you can activate a new prepaid plan.

No contract needed. T-mobile has different month to month plans. I had a $50.00 plan that was very good.. Unlimited Text, Unlimited nation wide Voice, and unlimited Data... First 500 MB of that data was at 4G speed the rest will be 2G. I now have the Unlimited 4G plan (well worth it) at $70.00 month.

You can take your phone to any T-mobile store or buy the kit from Walmart and do it from home. You may need to confirm if the phone from Walmort comes with a simcard kit, I don't know...I got mine from T-mobile. T-mobile sells the Nokia 521 for $200.00 but they give you a FREE $50.00 card and it comes with a FREE simcard kit to connect...comes out to $150.00.

No this is T-Mobile. They no longer have contracts. You can go Prepaid or go Monthly with this phone. I bought it as a Prepaid and called T-Mobile for a plan. It works out better for me to put my family on a plan. It depends how much you use it. However I am under no contract committment with them. I can stop at anytime.

This phone DOES come with Wifi Calling out of the box and it works great by the way.

You can call, receive calls and send/receive SMSs via Wifi, and yes, it does use your minutes.

Sorry but the other answer is not correct.
-First, this phone does not currently have the wifi calling feature, it *may* be added by t-mobile later in a firmware update
-Second, if the feature is added, prepaid users will ALWAYS be deducted minutes, even if you're using wifi calling. Post-paid users may or may not be deducted minutes, depending on their plan and features.

No, Wi-Fi calling does not use minutes. If you have a Wi-Fi network and set the Wi-Fi calling to preferred, it'll not use your minutes.

The only way currently to get the phone unlocked is to use T-Mobile service and ask them for an unlock code. What is not really problem , however straight talk is good for T-Mobile and this phone will works with straight talk as well make sure you order the right SIM card for T-Mobile device and you are good to go ... however the Straight Talk plan $45 is cheaper than T-Mobile what cost $60 for the same data usage and unlimited talk after 2.6 GB you are back to 3G on both plans

No, the Lumia 521 is locked to T-Mobile and does not feature native APN editing for use with other networks. The APN editor can be found for the device with some searching online, but unlocking requires a third party code or a minimum 60 day activation on a T-Mobile Simple Choice Plan.

Yes, but you will need to have T-Mobile switch the SIM number over because this phone comes with/takes a mini-SIM card. The switchover was painless and free.

calling t-mobile and doing this was very easy, they let you do it every 6 months with no charge. You also can cut the larger SIM card if wanted to and use it in the 521, there are templates online for doing this, but since the phone comes with the new smaller SIM, may as well use it. Cheers.

answer 3
Yes. In fact, all you need to do is move the SIM card from your current phone into the new phone. There should be nothing else that needs to be done -- your account is tied to the SIM card and not to the phone. You can even switch back and forth between the two phones, if for some reason you want to use your old phone for a time.

The Lumia 521 uses a micro-SIM card, so if your other phone uses that as well, just transfer the SIM cards and your good. If your phone has a different sized SIM card, you'll have to call T-Mobile to have the number transferred to the micro-SIM card in the Lumia 521.

Yes, as long as the number you wish to transfer is eligible, you can transfer that number to your new phone. You can transfer your existing mobile number, your landline number, or your current T-Mobile number to your No Annual Contract plan during the activation process. You’ll need your phone number, along with your account number and the PIN or password to complete the transfer.

Locked means it will only work with the carrier it was intended for. Unlocked means it will work with any carrier that supports the technology, and the carrier bands.

Most phones with a carrier brand on the device will be locked to that carrier. You would need to have the carrier unlock it. The only valid reason for locking a phone is to keep you under their contract. If you paid an unsubsidized price for the device, you should be allow to request an unlock code.

Keep in mind, that a phone unlocked is still confined to the technology and bands. A GSM phone will never work on a CDMA carrier. A device that has no LTE bands will only be able to connect with 2G or 3G services - no matter what the carrier says.

In the case of the 521, it will work on any GSM-2G band, and all GSM-3G bands with exception to the 900Mhz band. There is no LTE radio, and there is no support for CDMA, so it will not work on Sprint, nor Verizon.

Locked phones can only be used on the indicated carrier's network. Unlocked phones can be used on any compatible network. Most unlocked t-mobile and att phones will work on one another's networks.

answer 2
Yes. In the box is a microSIM card for T-Mobile (with an activation code).

You can activate a plan online at TMobile, including the $30 plan for 100 mins + Unlimited Text + Unlimited Data (5GB of it at high speed). $30 plan is for new activations only-- but you might be able to beg TMobile customer service if you're an existing customer.

Lastly, you can put in other TMobile SIMs (if you are upgrading your phone#. It's a microSIM, so if you have a 'bigger' SIM card in your old phone, you can simply cut it down to size #or take it to a Tmobile store and they should punch it down to the small size#.

This phone is a really good business tool and has a few downloadable free games. The really good ones will cost a few bucks. The android based phones have much more fun stuff on them than this one out of the box. This one is much better if you use it for work IMHO.

I think it has lots of great free games! Everyone has different preferences, so you might not like the games I like. But some of the free games I have on mine are Tetris Blitz, Wordament, 4pics 1word, 7 Little Words, Flow Free, and Hangman. I've seen lots of others, like texas hold 'em, minion rush, flappyfish, and hill climb racing (which I have for my Kindle Fire and LOVE). Hope this helps you! :)
