The phone on this particular page is the Sprint version and is a true 4G LTE device.

If you want the version that runs on Verizon, DO NOT ORDER THIS PHONE.

The Verizon version (S968C) will be on these pages (copy-and-paste):

White-

http://www.walmart.com/ip/Straight-Talk-Samsung-Galaxy-S3-Prepaid-Cell-Phone-White/29010048

Pebble Blue-

http://www.walmart.com/ip/Straight-Talk-Samsung-Galaxy-S3-Prepaid-Cell-Phone-Blue/29010041

Remember, however, that the Verizon version (CDMA-V) will be limited to 3G only and will not have access to 4G LTE.

Galaxy S series does not have a particular provider. It's who you purchase it under, which in this case is Straight Talk. Their towers usually run under Verizon's towers but now are also starting to you AT&T's towers as well. Usually depending on where you live, it's Verizon's towers.

I agree with LindyBugs that if you have a Straight Talk phone which uses the Verizon network that you will generally have great coverage traveling throughout the U.S.

However, to clarify a couple of things. This particular Straight talk phone uses the Sprint native network. The network a Straight Talk phone uses depends on the phone and not necessarily the location when using the phone. Straight Talk phones primarily use AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint with some limited T-mobile GSM SIMS.

If you have a Straight Talk phone that uses Verizon, the phone will use Verizon no matter your location in the U.S. If your ST phone uses AT&T, the phone will use AT&T service no matter your location in the country. And, if your phone uses Sprint, as this one does, the phone will use Sprint towers no matter where you travel or your location in the U.S.

Also, the Family Plan that Walmart is offering is not a Straight Talk plan. It is called "Walmart Family Mobile" and will operate exclusively on the T-mobile network and generally use T-mobile branded phones. It will use Walmart Family Mobile plans and not Straight Talk plans. Straight Talk does not have "family plans" per se.

The Straight Talk network uses other phone towers, whatever ones you are near. I have found from others it mainly uses the Verizon towers on the regular Strait Talk network. However, they are now offering a Family Plan in my area (DFW) that you can choose that uses T-Mobile towers. I chose to stick to the regular original Straight Talk as I have never had trouble with reception even while traveling.

Sprint's native network. No roaming. However, this phone will have access to true 4G LTE.

Make sure you have good Sprint data coverage in the areas you plan to use the phone for as you probably know, Sprint's coverage is not as extensive as AT&T and Verizon and has spotty coverage in rural areas.

Sprint's native coverage map (copy-and-paste):

http://coverage.sprint.com/mycoverage.jsp?id=BO543STC

You can hone in on your address with this map. However, the map does not show all the new areas where Sprint has 4G LTE as they are continually updating the LTE service areas. They claim that they will have 4G LTE in place in all their 3G areas by the end of 2014 ...that may be a bit optimistic.

Actually, this particular phone, the S968C, is on Verizon. 3G only.

850/1900 MHZ - EVDO Rev. A

There is a Sprint version of this phone that Straight Talk is offering that is Sprint powered however. Its model number is S960L (or designated on the box as "LTE-S") and will be a true 4G LTE device.

With all due respect to Community Answer, Estherwood shows excellent Sprint 4G LTE coverage. Again, go to the Sprint coverage map that I gave a link to in my previous post and it will be obvious. The I-10 corridor through Louisiana shows very good Sprint LTE coverage.

Bobby, the Straight Talk phone featured on this page, the Samsung Galaxy III S960L will use the Sprint native network.

This particular SIII is a true 4G LTE phone.

Straight Talk sells four versions of the SIII, 1) THIS phone, the S960L on Sprint, a true 4G LTE device, in White, 2) the S960L in Pebble Blue, 3) the S968C using Verizon but limited to 3G, in White, 4) the S968C using Verizon but limited to 3G in Pebble Blue.

You are actually in luck as this phone, the S960L in White, has access to Sprint 4G LTE in Estherwood and all the surrounding area.

Here is the Sprint coverage map where you can check your exact address (copy-and-paste):

http://coverage.sprint.com/mycoverage.jsp?id=BO543STC

Uncheck the 4G Wimax box as this phone will not have access to the less desirable WiMax.

The Straight Talk customer service number is 877-430-2355. Be patient as their call centers are outsourced and sometimes their reps are difficult to understand. Most are very helpful, however.

Question

Who is the service carrier? Sprint or Straight Talk?

The first customer review I read refers to Sprint being the service carrier although Walmart and Straight Talk hide this issue. I would like know considering the fact that I would like to get away from the high cost of Verizon, although their service is excellent. If Sprint is in any way affiliated with Straight Talk, forget it. So Straight Talk what is your answer?

I don't think Walmart and Straight Talk are really "hiding" anything as Straight Talk uses all four of the "big 4" networks and it is known that they are an MVNO. An MVNO contracts with the big networks to buy service wholesale and then resells it to us, the consumer.

On their website, Walmart discloses the network most phones use right in the title description of the phone.

This phone, the Samsung Galaxy S III, has in its title line (CDMA-S) which means it will use the Sprint network.

As you scan the list of phones available on the Walmart website, you'll see that others will be denoted with either "CDMA-V" which use Verizon, or "GSM-A" that use AT&T.

So depending on what phone one chooses, their Straight Talk phone could use Verizon, Sprint, AT&T or even T-mobile.

Straight Talk is not "affiliated" with Sprint but they do contract to buy some bulk service from Sprint so that some of their phones will run on the Sprint network. Other Straight Talk Phones will use the Verizon network and others will use the AT&T network.

Straight Talk is actually "affiliated" with Mexico's América Móvil which is their parent company. So is Tracfone and Net10, other examples, a subsidiary of América Móvil.

Sorry, I guess I didn't understand your question.

Net10 has several different configurations of the SIII. From what I can remember, one is 3G, one is 4G, and the other is HSPDA+ running on different networks.

Again, the Sprint version on Straight Talk (this particular phone) will use Sprint's native network which includes their quickly expanding 4G LTE in the areas where it is available.

I still don't think that's answering your question but I'll defer to others who might want to chime in.

From all that I have gathered, it is true 4G LTE ...where it's available.

BUT, and it's a bit BUT ...it is only going to pick up Sprint's 4G LTE which currently is very scarce but rapidly being rolled out.

This phone will only operate on the Sprint native network so even 3G will be not as plentiful as other carriers especially if you move around a lot or are in rural areas a lot of the time.

If the locations that you will use the phone have good Sprint coverage, then it's a good deal especially if you're in one of the Sprint 4G LTE areas.

Sprint will also have a much more liberal definition of "unlimited" data for MVNOs using their service and probably will not throttle or terminate your service for using too much data.

There is no contract with Straight Talk. You pay in advance for your service so you can go month to month if you wish. You can quit at any time and go to another service. It doesn't mean your phone will be compatible with that service and you may have to buy a new phone to work with the new service you choose.

Some Straight Talk phones will have SIM cards and some will not. And some with SIM cards may be locked. This refurbished iPhone 4 is a CDMA phone that I believe does not have a SIM card slot and if not, you will not be able to use it on T-mobile service. You may or may not be able to flash it to another service. I'll let somebody else who is more familiar with the phone answer that.

This refurbished Straight Talk phone as it is shipped will be used with the Verizon native network.
