Question

How does the Acer Chromebook Speakers compare to the Samsung Chromebook speakers?

I don't know about specs, but I can tell you that the Samsung speakers seem louder and the sound is less "tinny" than the Acer's speakers. The Acer's speakers are located on the bottom of the unit, which amplifies the audio when it's on a table. But if the Acer is on your lap, the sound is a bit muffled. You can always use a "lap desk" on your lap which provides a hard flat surface. Or, you can also use headphones with the Acer which will help with audio quality. Overall, I still like the Acer chromebook better than the Samsung.

The person that said 'you cannot use Word' in a Chromebook hasn't look very close. Granted it will only let you View a Word document until you Open in in Google Docs. Then you can edit or update the same document and return it as a Word document. Word and Google docs are interchangeable within each operating system.

There are several word processing apps available in the Chrome Store. You cannot use Microsoft Word, as it is windows software, and this is not a windows machine...this machine has Chrome. You also cannot download any software to a chromebook; you can only use web apps to accomplish tasks. I use Google Drive as my word processing app. I think it works well. Go to Google Play and browse the Chrome Web Store to see the apps available.

You can't install Office products (2007, 2010, 2013, etc) to the operating system as you would with a Windows or Apple computer. You would be able to access PowerPoint through Office 365, a cloud-based version of Microsoft Office, if you signed up for it and had an active internet connection.

Question

Will it read from a USB flash drive?

We want this for a computer-questionable/illiterate grandma. We want to
1) load photos and videos onto a flash drive, 2) send her the flash drive so that she can 3) plug the drive into a USB port and see the photos and watch the vids.

Simple. Can this be done like this (simply) with this book? Will this book "host" a flash drive and read from it? What sort of video-playing program does it have?

Question

How to connect to the internet

I have an iMac on Ethernet connection to the modem. Regarding the Acer chromebook C7, how do I connect to the internet? I do not want to use wifi unless there is no other way. A router has been suggested but is this easy to set up? Can I just plug the Acer by Ethernet cord to the modem, where the Mac was, and use them alternately? Thanks.

the acer chrome book has an ethernet jack on left side. I have never tried hooking it straight to a modem. I am guessing you probably could. I use wifi and it works getting on the net flawlessly every time. would suggest that that is what you should do also.

The Chromebook does have an ethernet connection available. If you get a router you would be able to have multiple devices connected via ethernet and use them individually.
