1 to 2 pounds per gallon - 20 up to 40.

answer 2
The bottom is 24.25" x 12.5" and the black rim around the bottom comes up 0.5". So if you wanted to fill it with sand or gravel only up to the top of the black rim you would need 151.5 cubic inches of gravel. This would be enough to fill a 5.5" square cube or 0.65 Gallons.

Tank is tempered glass. General rule of thumb is 1 lb of gravel per gallon capacity. I used a 25 lb bag.

is the filter system good enough for a 20 gal tank

Absolutely! It comes with a 10-30 gal filter...if it was a 10-20 I would recommend a larger filter, because I like to leave a little reliability cushion for any hardware for the fish tank...i.e. it's better than it needs to be. Rest assured, it's more than adequate.

The light on the Aqua Culture is an LED light and the Glofish light is a blue LED light that gives off a fluorescent look.

I have read that 2 gallons per fish. When I set up my 10 gallon tank i intended to put fancy goldfish in it, but the guy at the pet store advised me to get 5 feeder goldfish to make sure the water was ok. I assumed that they would die, but in no time but they have continued to quickly grow. I thought 5 more feeders wouldn't make much difference, but they really are cramped so I upgraded to a 20 gallon. Cost of 10 fish...$1.00...2 fish tanks $140.00! Save your money and start with the 20 gallon or larger.

I am a beginning fish enthusiasts, but everything I've read, and been told, is to allow 1 inch fish per gallon. If you go to a pet store, sometimes the labels on the tanks say how many of the fish you are interested in will fit per gallon.

We got a Aqueon 50 watt submersible aquarium heater as we intend on placing non tropical fish .
Auto shut off
Heat dial on top
And it is a floating unit instead of a stationery one

I would suggest going with a 100 watt heater like the Tetra http://www.walmart.com/ip/Tetra-Heater-30-60-Fish-Aquatic-Pets/10291807
A 50 watt would work but only marginally and I prefer a slight overkill for safty.
