Yes! I had Nabi 2's for my kids and got sick of the whole Nabi interface and bad chargers. I bought 2 of these for them. I did get the big Vivitar 7" tablet bumper skins with them at Walmart. Now my kids have real tablets. If I give them Minecraft, Netflix, and Youtube they are good to go. The camera on these are decent and has a flash. It is Google Certified so the OS isn't all junked up and it will run anything normal from Google Play. These also use a normal micro USB charger so if you have a nice phone these will charge from the same charger. Also the charger that comes with it will charge your phone. :) In other words if your kids are ready for a "real" tablet this one is great. And you won't mind using it either..:)

As the HiSense rep said get a parental control app. The one called "Kids Place" has great reviews and a video on how to set it up. It's got a link to the Play store and more info at http://kiddoware.com/ and even lets you change the title in settings so it doesn't say "Kids Place" for older kids. I've been using it a bit on a phone and it seems to work great.

If not, make sure to at least set a password for in-app purchases. See the how-to at https://support.google.com/googleplay/answer/1626831?hl=en

I think so - that's why I bought it. I'm concerned about how much access the 8 and 9 year old will have to the internet and such, but I'm willing to figure out how to curtail.

Regarding the build, I think it feels solid. If you really want it to be kid-proofed, you're going to have to get a case and screen protector for it. My kids are pretty good with handling devices *smaller* than a tablet, so we're going to have to see how it goes.

Lastly, this tablet has Android 4.2.1 and required some sort of system update from Hisense soon after I got it running. The next version of Android (4.3?) is the one that seems to manage multiple users and provide for restricted profiles. I wish I had that version for the kids.

Hope this helps...

I never could get Google Nav to work. It always lost the signal and then had to reconnect with WIFi to start over.

Splurge and get CoPilot. It's a true fully-functional offline Nav app. It lets you select which areas to download, and works offline. It also has nice features like selecting two different parameters to display (Speed, heading, altitude, eta, etc), switching to night mode automatically based on position, and taking user corrections if you find a mistake. Worth the price, especially considering the cost of a Garmin with a much smaller screen.

If you need to check live traffic or gas prices, either use your phone as a hotspot, or pull into McDonalds or somewhere else with free wifi and check it, then continue on. I never really need to, and have successfully navigated with CoPilot all over three states.

According to Google's "Access maps offline" page found at:
https://support.google.com/gmm/answer/3246076

"The amount of map that you can make available offline will depend on the amount of storage on your device. If you have limited storage, making a new area available offline may replace your previously offlined maps. If you are offline for a long period, typically more than 14 days, or clear application data for Google Maps for mobile, your offlined maps will also be deleted."

So if you want to use it offline, be sure you have enough storage space available and save the maps less than 14 days before your journey !!

Download Copilot the free version in the Google Play store. It is a Full GPS with turn by turn navigation. The best free gps app. Google maps is good, but if you do not have a constant data connection, than you cannot use it. Make sure you download the maps via wifi connection on copilot before you use it.

First you have to have a wifi connection and you load in Google maps the map sections of the areas that you are going to want to see in gps. Now in Google maps there is a feature that you can save that map to read in off line mode. So you would save all those map areas you want to use in GPS. Then when you are traveling and have no wifi access, you should be able to see where you are with your GPS using your downloaded maps.

Using the micro-usb charger supplied with the tablet or any micro-usb charger that you already have from your phone. It's always suggested to only use the charger supplied with the equipment. I put a sticker on all my chargers stating specifically what equipment it's for as to not risk doing harm to the battery life. Label your chargers.

Plug one end into a regular outlet, the other tiny end goes into your tablet. Carefully look at the ends and make sure you put the plug into the tablet correctly, there is a top and bottom size difference, don't cram it into the tablet, it should slide in gently if it's correct.

Question

electronics dummy:)

I only have regular broadband through our city. I'm assuming I won't be able to use the internet with this at home. What about other places? Or do I need to be making a monthly payment for wifi to use the internet with this? I always thought you needed a password to use others' wifi. I realize some places have free wifi that can even be accessed in a parking lot...will this pick that up even though I don't have a wifi account myself? My sister in law was going on and on about needing cellular. I'm pretty confused, but would love to have a tablet. Thanks for any help!

If you have wifi at home you should be able to connect to it. You have a password for a safe connection. Some free wifi hot spots require a password but the business will provide you with it if you ask them. Cellular service costs on a monthly basis and most tablets with the cellular option are more expensive.

1.) If you have internet service at your home, you can purchase a wireless router to set up wifi in your home. Then you can log on with your tablet.

2.) There are tablets that have both wifi and cellular service capabilities. They usually cost more and you have to pay a monthly fee for the cellular service.

I use the wifi with my Hisense 7 pro.

answer 2
The tablet connects wirelessly to the internet which can be your own home wireless network using a router set up with your broadband or by connecting to public WiFi hotspots. Hotspots can be places such as restaurants or even hotels you stay at providing you with the password. Your tablet will search for available networks to connect to when changing locations. If a password is needed, it will ask for one to connect.

This is a wifi only tablet, so you need to be connected to wifi to surf the web or get email. There are a lot of locations that offer free wifi, such as McDonald's and Starbucks. You don't need any special access or accounts for free wifi service if you are out and about and want to connect. Generally, the only thing you'll have to do to get access to a free network, is connect and accept their terms of service which usually pop up when you open your browser. If you do not have wifi at your home, you will not be able to get on the internet their. But if you have wired internet at home, it's a pretty easy thing to add a wireless router.

answer 5
You say you have broadband through the city. If you have internet of any kind coming into your home, you can add a wireless router and use the Hisense Sero 7 or ANY wi-fi enabled tablet. And, yes, there are PLENTY of places that offer free wi-fi and the Sero 7 Pro connects with no problem. The only reason you'd need 3G or 4G in your tablet is if you wanted to use it while traveling, such as using the map program as a GPS receiver. And, of course, many apps don't even require internet connectivity to work.

It takes a normal micro USB charger. The charger that comes with it is 5V 2.0A which is the same as high end phones. In other words there are a billion car chargers for it. The trick is finding one that rocks. Don't buy the cheapest one. A good Galaxy S4 phone charger would work great. A Galaxy S2 charger doesn't put out 2A so it won't work. Get a 2A or 2.1A charger and you are good to go.

32gb. That is unless you are rooted and am running a custom ROM like Gummy or Cynagenmod 4.4.2 or higher. The framework in these ROMs allow for up to 128gb. micro SD cards to be used. I will tell you that I have not tried the 128gb or a 64gb. I am currently running a class 10, 32gb in mine. Go to sero7forum.com and read through the threads to find out this and a lot more.

You can use a 64GB SD Micro SDXC card in any phone or tablet if you use a 3rd party tool that will format the card to FAT32. Windows will not format anything greater than 32GB to FAT32 thus the limitation for tablets and phones that only accept 32GB cards because they use FAT32.

You can find videos on YouTube that show you how to use 64/128GB cards in tablets or phones that say 32GB cards are the limit.

Blue toothtooth is different than WiFi. Bluetooth allows you to communicate between devices. WiFi allows you to communicate with a network. So you need a wifi network to connect to the internet. You can use your phone as a mobile hot spot. Some cars come with mobile hot spot in them via OnStar and you have a cellular plan with them.

??? Apples and oranges. If you connect to bluetooth in your car, then the sounds coming from your tablet will be played through your car speakers, it has nothing to do with internet. It will not inhibit you from an internet connection if you have one available using WiFi.

Bluetooth is just a way of one device "talking" to another device. If you have bluetooth on a phone and wanted to transfer pictures onto this device, then you could bluetooth it to find the device, then transfer pictures or files. If you had a bluetooth keyboard that you wanted to run with this tablet, then you could bluetooth it so they find each other and run the keyboeard. Bluetooth is not the internet.

I suppose many book readers (Overdrive, Nook, Kindle) allow you to control font size within the application. I use Overdrive and download books from my local library system. I can change the font size, background (day/night) etc. I would look into the book reader you're interested in to see if their Android variant supports pinch/zoom or if it's controlled within the application another way.

On websites I've been able to pinch/zoom with no problem.

It depends on what app you use. The tablet has no control over the ereader app you use which is either installed with that feature or not.
I use Alkido for all my books and you can zoom in and out pinching. You can choose to use any of the other ereader apps such as Stanza, Kindle (the worst even though it's the most popular), Alkido, or Google Books. There are a bunch more that I haven't even looked into.
