Yes, you must use only metal Singer Class 15 bobbins. The bobbin thread tension depends on a magnet on the bobbin for its tension.

Only if you can vary the width of the zig-zag satin stitch. You will have to manually create the wide stitch at both ends of the buttonhole as well as the narrower satin stitch on the sides of the buttonhole.

It does not make button holes for you. Read the whole instruction book.
Tells how to sew on buttons, but not how to make a button wholes. I assume you would use zigzag stitch and need to know what you are doing. Hope this helps.

The Vivo does not have a built-in buttonhole stitch. You could make a manual buttonhole using the zigzag stitch just like our grandmothers did with the machines they had back then.

I would not recommend this machine to anyone, especially a beginner. If I had used this machine as a beginner, I would have gotten discouraged and given up on sewing. The Vivo has gotten mixed reviews with about 50% of users having difficulty. I would suggest that you read reviews on other models you are considering and purchase one with more consistant positive reviews.

answer 4
The Vivo is not designed for use by children but it is certainly a great option for kids to learn to sew if they have the appropriate adult supervision.
Basic stitch selections make it easy to pick a stitch and go.
Two sewing speeds allow a controlled, slower speed then many machines provide by forcing the machine to go slower allowing the child to focus on technique and watching where little fingers are.
A Blind Hem stitch and presser foot is included so one can master the fold required for this useful technique. A Buttonhole and Zipper Foot are not included but with practice these could be learned the ‘traditional’ way – how we did it before machines became ‘smart’.

answer 5
I would be a bit concerned with only 2 speeds. Learning the sewing techniques requires snail pace for some things and I would be worried that there is no varying the speed other than what it is set to do. May be worth spending a bit more, or looking at a nice used machine so you don't have any set speeds - it all depends on how much pressure you put on the pedal.

The only thick material I sewed on was a heavy woven blanket I cut in half for my pet. I sewed the edges so it would not unravel, did't have any problems doing that. I don't know anything else about jean material or anything.

answer 3
The Vivo is designed for basic mending and quick projects. It will handle thicker fabrics.
It is not designed to be able to withstand something like sewing a flat felled seam on denim or to be able to go over the seam area as you try to hem a pair of jeans.

Usually the symptom that you describe is caused by the upper tension of the machine not being threaded correctly.
Here is an easy test you can perform to help you determine if your machine is threaded correctly. First raise the presser foot (UP POSITION), now go ahead and thread the machine all the way to the last guide before the needle (DO NOT THREAD THE NEEDLE). (When threading this area of the machine, it helps if you hold the thread securely with your right hand just after you slip the spool of thread and spool cap on to the spool pin. Continue holding the thread until you arrive at the last thread guide before the needle). Next with the presser foot UP pull the thread towards you, there should be very little resistance. Now LOWER the presser foot, if the tension disks are threaded correctly, there should be a significant difference in the tension when you pull the thread. There should be resistance. If there was very little difference with the foot down versus the foot up, you need to repeat the threading steps. If there is a significant resistance, proceed to threading the needle.

Question

Do I need to reset the tension or something else when I'm hemming pants?

The needle is bending beyond repair. I'm trying to hem some track pants (sweat pants, but nicer). When I get to the sides of the pants, the needle isn't going through and is bending! What do I need to do? Reset the tension, use a different part? what?

I wonder if you are using the correct needle type & size.
Why don't you give us a call and describe exactly what you are experancing and what type of needle you are using to that we can figure out what is going on: Singer’s Consumer Affairs Dept. at 1800-4SINGER (1800-474-6437), M-F, 8:00 – 4:00 CST.
