Yes. Once you connect to WiFi you get a prompt to upgrade to 4.4.2 (kitkat) and it does so fast and easy.

It does this upon starting up the device. When I hooked mine up a week or so before Christmas to get it ready for my daughter. As soon as I hooked up the WiFi, it went through a system update which included KitKat.

It doesn't have a phone number. I am sure you can use Skype though.

No, this is not a phone.
In order to mimic your phone you'd need an app that does that.

You can however send and receive Skype calls. It actually does that really well.

Not on this one. You can purchase this same model but with mobile service. You must find a listing that indicates it is for mobile though. This one is for WiFi only.

With the TextNow app you can text and send and receive phone calls for free when you accumulate minutes by watching video trailers and you can pay for extra minutes. You need to be by WiFi though.

With the Wi-Fi version it would require an internet connection and several apps and services as a workaround. With the 3G version it might be possible with simply Google Voice or a similar app and the phone number from your cell phone. I have only tried with the Wi-Fi version.

No. I don't use mobile for my tablet and this item listing doesn't have it. I use my home WiFi or connect to another WiFi if available when I'm out and about. Other listings for this same model offer mobile carrier service although I don't know with which one.

The 16GB version is not 4G data capable only the 32GB is. I would advise getting an LTE version of this tablet at either T-Mobile or AT&T for the data plan.

Perhaps the 32GB tablet is refurbished or 1st generation. This 16GB is brand new 2nd generation.
answered 11 months ago

answer 2
It could be a "refurbished" model or it could be the 1st generation. This is the 2nd generation. Unfortunately there is no way of knowing the difference between the 2 as the brief description header does not change. If you compare the specs in the full description you will see the difference.

Simple....the 16GB with the higher price is for the 2013 model which also has a higher resolution screen and dual cameras, the 32GB with the Lower price came out in 2012 and only has one camera (rear) and a lower resolution screen, Both Tablets are now running on the latest android OS which is 4.4

I think that the 32gb one that is for $189 is the older version. The operating system is an older version (4.1 jellybean) on the 32gb and this one is the newer 4.3 jellybean.

The processor and a few other things are updated as well.

for taking pictures this tablet (next generation 2013 Nexus7) is not bad. I wouldn't rate it excellent but I would say it's definitely good. You can also upload a free cartoon camera app that is quite fun. But I would not use this as my go to camera. Also, this has both a front and a rear facing camera which makes it very flexible when taking pictures.

answer 4
Nothing special for photos. But my guess is that if you are using this for a camera you are not a professional as this would be sacrilege. I think for the in the moment area, this serves it's purpose.

however, I am not a pro either and do not try to diagnose the picture for flaws. There is no flash though, so low light may not be all that great.

Its not the best but its not the worst. You could compare it to any 5MP camera phone but definitely not the iPhone or Lumia 41MP. Although it does have panoramic and 360 camera shots its just a tablet and works great for things like Skype.

While tablet cameras are usually not as good as the high end phones, the 5MP camera on the Nexus 7 has been excellent for use at work and home to document my activities and family... color well saturated, accurate color reproduction, sharp focus.... a very good tablet camera!

You can read epub book if you install the Nook app. The result is better than expected. You can adjust the size and the color of the background and of the caracters. You can adjust the line spacing also. The only problem, it's more difficult to read outside, unless you install a screen protector.

Yes it's the newer model.

It's good, but I certainly wouldn't expect it to perform as a replacement for a high quality video camera.

Good question. I could not determine "generation" altho I was very curious how to determine this myself. Do not know how to determine what version this is. Ad copy says this is the latest Android system, but it would be nice to be able to find this info.

answer 4
This is the 2013 2nd edition. If you mean can you record video via the camera, then yes you can. If you mean record things you are viewing on it. Then I am not sure.

There is no video camera app on the device. However I did find a App that helps you access that option. See the link below. I believe you can get to it via the camera function though. It just may not be straight forward.

answer 2
Yes you can convert speech to text when sending an email. There is a speech recognition app preloaded on the tablet. When you are in a window composing an email (or basically anywhere you type like a facebook post or a browser URL field for that matter) you will find a little microphone icon either on the keyboard or in search bar. You tap it and it actually does a really good job majority of time in capturing speech accurately. I just dictated this part of my post actually so you can see its really quite good hope this helps.

It comes with the standard manufacturers one year warranty. Things like defect in product or workmanship. It will not cover accidental drops, spills or breaks. That is what an protection plan is for, which is what I would recommend and why I use Walmart. They have for the most part good service with some of the best prices.
