The SPDIF (digital coax, not optical) output provides 5.1 surround sound only when using the built-in tuner (antenna/cable input). For all other sources, the audio is 'dumbed down' to simple stereo (PCM).
For playing DVDs or BluRays or Roku, if you want surround sound you will need to connect the player directly to your sound equipment, bypassing the TV's audio connections.
This annoying design is, sadly, typical of most TV brands and models.
