I think it should be able to sew denim. The needle is pretty sturdy!

I have ordered this machine for my niece, but I don't have it, yet. Reading some of the answers about this machine, the one thing that is not coming up and I think it is important to mention about any machine is the needle. The key to sewing heavy-duty fabrics such as denim depends mostly on the type of needle you use in the machine. There are a lot of opinions out there about machines, and it would be like talking about cars! This is comparable to a compact car. It will get you from A to B without the bells and whistles. If you don't want to sew by hand and you are looking for an inexpensive machine, you can't beat the Black Friday deal going on right now for this machine. However, your machine will probably come with a standard or light-weight needle for lightweight fabrics. Some may give you a sample pack, I don't know what this machine will provide. You can and should change the needle with use as it will get dull. You always want a sharp point and you don't want your needle to break while you're sewing. The needle should always be changed based on the fabric you are going to sew. Denim and corduroy are considered heavy materials and need a heavy-duty needle. You can find needles in packs specifically for denim fabrics at any sewing store and probably Wal-Mart, too, in the notions area. Above all, read the manual for the machine and have fun sewing!
