It includes a rapidly expiring trial version of McAfee that does more nagging for a credit card number than protecting you from malware.

Microsoft includes free of charge "Windows Defender" that does the same as McAfee and anyone can download an "upgraded" Microsoft Security Essentials w/o charge or question from:

http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=5201

Your version of HP may or might not already include SecEssentials and the download page reports your current protection status.

it offers a free 30day trial by Norton, but if you use your computer wisely and don't travel to unfamiliar websites or open emails that are not familiar then you shouldn't have to worry about a future purchase. Also it has security features that you can adjust to preference.

Yes. 60 days of Norton Security Suite. If you have a internet provider service, they will offer you Norton or another Anti-Virus program for free or at least Comcast/Xfinity does. There are also free anti-virus programs you can download from http://www.cnet.com

Simply put, NO.
I purchased two, manually tuned them and stripped out the dead weight in the same manner I deploy servers and they just crashed a little less but struggled just as much.

The video card has only 1GB of shared RAM, which was the top dog performance in the year 2002.

A Blackberry is better at playing HD.

This laptop is slow at everything except crashing and losing your unsaved work.

It has the lowest Windows Experience Index of 4.1 and struggles to run two programs.

Asking HP Tech Support is worse and they won't need a telephone to hear your screams.

I bought two of these HP's and refunded both in 72 hours, do yourself a favor and spend the extra on a better Toshiba with the same good parts but none of the bad, sold at Walmart for:

Yes but, I suggest you buy the the additional 4GBs of RAM for proper speed, like I did with mime. It make a big difference in speed & stops buffering. Netflix is installed & if you have never used Windows 8, I suggest you download the proper Windows Updates. Then the free Windows 8.1 will be offered on the Microsoft Windows App Store. I did & it's great.

This is a very good deal for what you are looking to use it for, however be prepared for the initial updates that seem to take forever. Once they are complete you will enjoy watching your videos without a problem.

Not hard, you just have to get use to Windows8 I am use to viewing in desktop mode were all the icons are on the screen but this one you have to click on desktop on the screen

answer 2
The set up is very easy, once your turn it on it steps you through a few questions, like user name, screen color preference etc. and if you have wifi in you home it will search for it and ask for you password. If you answer yes to allow automatic upgrades it will go ahead and upgrade you to windows 8.1 (free), and also upgrade any other programs that have upgrades since the instillation during manufacture. So set up is quite easy. If you are new to windows 8 it might take you a while to get comfortable with that. There is a tile for getting started with windows 8 which is very helpful. If you like the Old look there is a tile for DESKTOP. Hope this helps.

Not that difficult. When the computer starts, you will be asked to type a name (I used my first name). Then click yes, if you want to use the installed 60 day Norton Security Suite. It will require you to have a Microsoft Email Account ( Outlook or Hotmail) because you will have to sign in with it, which will be stored on the computer. Your password will be required, to sign on to Windows 8. After you let Windows install updates, you will have the option of installing free Windows 8.1 from the Microsoft Windows App Store. I did & it's great. Lots of free useful apps there, also.

No,
It's sturdy for a plastic laptop almost like an ingot, but struggles with basic multitasking and freezes or crashes despite Windows 8 improved resource management.

If budgeting is the top priority, consider a muscular desktop w/o the laptop portability but powerful enough to help kids learn instead of teaching them anger management lessons this HP seems designed for.

The included DVD writer will play the cd's and it works on line fine for me. If it is for kids school work I think it will be fine, and a very good value. It is not good for gaming as the speed and graphics wouldn't be sufficient.

Yes. There's 4GBs of RAM installed. I suggest you buy an additional 4GBs of RAM & install it or most computer supply stores will install it for free. I noticed quit a difference in speed, when I did. I went to Computer Express, northeast of downtown Indianapolis, IN, on East 82nd Street.
