Question

How do you change the time since it doesn't automatically change?

The time just changed around the U.S.A. and this phone did not auto update and there is no setting in the phone to change the time. Do I just keep it in my mind that the clock on this phone will be off until the next time change?

If the time does not automatically adjust after re-booting the phone, you can manually set the time by navigating from the Main menu to Settings. From Settings, select Phone Settings, then Date and Time. From this menu, you can also adjust the settings to allow for automatic updating for Daylight Saving Time.

My apologies for not being helpful. All the phones I've owned have changed times automatically by the network but I guess it was on the default settings is why they did change for DST and Time Zones.

Now that I look at my current phone and look at the manual for your phone, I see that there is a DST setting (like I say, it must be the default on all the phones I have owned because I never remember going in and setting the DST setting).

For your phone from page 37 of your User Manual, here is how to navigate to the DST setting:

Setting the Date and Time-

Allows you to set the date and time in 12H or
24H format.

You can also set the daylight saving adjustment.

From the main menu, select Settings > Phone
settings > Date and time.

Here's the User Manual if you've lost yours (copy-and-paste ...in a PDF file):

The time should be a function of the carrier. You shouldn't have to adjust it yourself. It will adjust itself through the signal it's receiving. It will adjust to DST and will also adjust itself as you travel through time zones in the U.S.

If it still hasn't changed, try rebooting the phone.

We get LOUD weather alerts we didn't ask for. How can we turn them off?

The Alcatel phone is new and set up for voice calls only, no browser, nothing else at all. Why do we get these alerts? We can't find out how to turn them off.

Pat, I'm kind of thinking that they are CMAS (Commercial Mobile Alert System) alerts. Does it appear that they are coming from a text? They seem to be for severe weather only, correct? If so, they are probably CMAS or WEA (Wireless Emergency Alerts).

These alerts consist of 1) Presidential alerts if a national emergency, 2) AMBER alerts, and 3) Severe weather, imminent threats, and related emergency alerts.

You should be able to disable 2 and 3 but Presidential alerts are mandatory.

I don't have this exact phone but try this:

From the "Main" menu go to "Messages" > "Settings"

You should then see three options (Text Message, Multimedia Message, and CMAS Message). Choose "CMAS Message" and then choose to disable.

Fore more information on WEA, go to this page on FEMA's website (copy-and-paste):

Only if you transfer it before your old phone goes inactive. Once you let your old phone goes inactive they recycle your number and it's lost. I think you have like 2-3 days after your card expires. I waited a week in between phones and lost my old number. I tried though but it won't let you with online activation. Do it the same day your old phone expires and you will have no problem. I got lucky and got a great new easy number! :)

From the User Manual, starting on page 17:

Once you have stored phone numbers to
your Contacts, you can set a maximum of
8-speed dial entries and then dial them easily
by pressing and holding the corresponding
numeric key.

Setting Up Speed Dial Entries:

1. From the main menu, select Settings >
Phone settings > Keypad > Numeric keys.

2. Highlight the key with which you wish to
assign the speed-dialing number (from 2 to
9), press Edit > Contacts.

3. Scroll to choose a contact you want to
assign from Contacts and press OK.

Lois, you can use either the $30 or $45 Plan (or multiples of the $45 Plan or the $60 Unlimited International). In other words, you can use any Straight Talk cell phone plan.

Since it isn't a smartphone, it's not required to use the $45 Plan. Smartphones are the ones that require the $45 Plan (phones that use Android, iOS, BlackBerry, or Windows Operating Systems).
