Question

Does the SQ9185 have a needle up/down button?

I cannot find any detail on whether or not the Brother SQ9185 has a needle up/down feature. This is important to me since I do a lot of free motion quilting. I did read that you can drop the feed dogs so I would hope you could set the needle position to up or down also. Thanks.

Thank you for your question.

This model is made for use in the US with the 120V for the US. Voltage specifications are printed on the rating plates of Brother Products. As a result, each product is designed and CSA/UL approved for its specified voltage. Although step up or down transformer may be used, the voltage and minimum amperage indicated on the rating plate is required. Performance may vary between (step up or down) transformer manufacturers therefore, we cannot guarantee the results. To determine the wattage of the machine, you multiply the voltage times the amperage which equals the wattage.
The manufacturer's warranty applies only to products purchased and used in the United States. For products purchased in, but used outside, the United States, this warranty covers only warranty service within the United States (and does not include shipping outside the United States).

Thank you for your question.

If you are having looping on the top of the fabric, this generally means that there is an issue in the bobbin area. Please check the bobbin and make sure it is well wound. It should be installed in the bobbin case so that it turns counter-clockwise in the bobbin case. Also, clean the bobbin area of any excess thread and lint. Change the needle making sure to use a 14 needle.

answer 2
Your thread isn't threaded properly. I know it sounds condescending but I had to deal with this too. Check to be sure you have a fresh needle the right size for your fabric. Use a pipe cleaner to brush out all the fuzz. Pay attention to your thread making sure it passes between those two tight metal plates on the top far right before bringing it down to the front. The best thread I have found is coats and coats all purpose. Clean out your bobbin area. Set the tension back to 4 and try again with scrap fabric. It's unlikely that it is the machine. You just need to get to know it.

I believe the bobbin tension needs to be adjusted. I had that problem as well on my singer, and changing the bobbin tension fixed the problem.

Thank you for your question. The machine default is set so the needle is left in the down position. You can change the default to leave in the up position. Please see page 15 in your manual for steps in changing the needle stop position.
