It's not a chocolate nor a black. My daughter has a bedroom suite from a furniture store. It is considered Expresso in color. This would match her room just fine so I would qualify it as a true Expresso. It would NOT match your black furniture, sorry.

I have this organizer next to a black media tower. You can definitely tell the difference between the two - especially if there's a light close by. Even so, this organizer is a very deep brown, but might be mistaken for black in certain lighting. I'm not sure how helpful that is, but it's my two cents. :)

Also, I can confirm the Ikea brand made for Expedit/Kallax works with this shelf.

I just purchased this. My instructions say to see a video of the assembly go to www.huisenfurniture.com. If you click on videos at the top of the page several storage units come up. Click on the 8 cube organizer and the video will start after a couple of advertisements. I couldn't find printed instructions but there is an email address to contact them. It is admin@jxhuisen.com. I hope this helps.

My husband put it together in about 1 1/2hours with interruptions. It DOES come with GOOD directions. Can you google the maker (from the box) and ask them to send you another set of directions? I would help more if my husband hadn't thrown directions and box away! He is bad about that and to let you know, always slow putting any of these things together. Lots of interruptions in our house. I don't think calling Walmart will help unless they can get you the phone number of the manufacturer. Make sure you get all the detail before going online or even calling later like model number, anything you can get off the box. Hopefully someone still has the directions still, can copy them and mail to you.

How glossy is the finish?

Looking at the pic of the white shelf, the finish looks pretty glossy. Hard to tell with the Espresso finish. I'm interested in purchasing the white finish but worry that it will look too plastic-like?

The white is medium. It's NOT shiny, nor is it flat. The darker color actually has a dark wood grain affect which I found quite appealing.

My husband measured INSIDE the cube for you to answer this question.
Sorry, inside it is only 13 inches.
We were just so desperate, we but our books on their side. I'm referring to regular books though, not photo albums. The price was good though. We also use the shelf on it's side which gives it another dimension. But unfortunately it is 13 inches anyway you lay it. : (. Just to let you know, those other cheap bookcases out there where you can adjust the shelves with pegs, we already tried these. They DESTROYED most of my wonderful book collection. ALL the shelves bowed on me, which ended up ruining most of my hardcover books and it makes me cry about my nice preschool and elementary paperback books I collected. I am not talking about teenage years small paper books, but the big nice ones you collect for your children and read to them through the years. I had already whittled my books down to about 5 of those tall adjustable shelves that sell for about $80-$100 each. They are for nothing other than light knick-knacks! Please, don't fall for these. These cube ones are a lot better, but I don't know how stacking albums would be on the photos.

Question

Can casters be added?

I would like to add casters to make movement easier. Are the bottom pieces sturdy enough for this?

answer 1
Although the sides are about 2" thick they are also hollow. They are plenty strong enough for the unit itself but no, castors would not work by themselves. They would have to be attached to another piece of wood much wider to disperse the weight before being screwed to the bottom.
answered 2 months ago
By

answer 2
I think this item is too heavy for casters. The panels are not very strong (both times they arrived dented), so I would imagine after time caster could fall out.

I don't like to mess with the integrity of pre- made self assemble products, however it is a sturdy unit so there is a chance that the wood wont split. Maybe a hardware store might have a a solid top dolly with casters that will make mobility easier. Good luck :)
