Please read just what richardarr states, for he & I are usually very accurate with our answer's plus we usually agree with each other. Always look for his review and/or answer to the question(s), as he's usually right on target. So, copy & past his link which will get you to the mobile wi-fi device you'll need to apply your service card to via straighttalk.com or their toll free # Mobile Hotspot at: 1-877-430-CELL(2355) . I have found their CSR's to be knowledgeable & helpful if you need any added help from straight talk. Plus you can usually find a well versed Walmart employee in their electronic's dept's world-wide.
Straight-talk also has a live human that you can click and chat with if you simply need directions, as this often spell's the step's out and you can save your conversation history with the live operator/CSR application & either refer back to it when needed or simply print out the log of your conversation and use that as future reference if you are uncomfortable saving it to your internet device.

Donna, this service card only works to provide service to the Straight Talk Hotspot. The Hotspot in turn can then provide a wifi signal for your tablet to use.

What you have to do is to first purchase the Hotspot which is currently being sold at Walmart for $79 (copy-and-paste):

http://www.walmart.com/ip/Straight-Talk-WiFi-Mobile-HotSpot-3G/30824075

Once you purchase the Hotspot, you then purchase this service card. When you apply the service card to the Hotspot, it will then provide a wifi signal for any device you may have that uses wifi ...i.e., your tablet, smartphone, laptop, desktop, etc.

It is your own personal wifi that can travel with you and provides a wifi connection just like Starbucks or a hotel, etc. would do when you travel. Only with this Hotspot, you have your own personal wifi source.

as I understand it --no the hotspot card is data only and the $45.00 card is talk, text and data-- and works on a different system..

Unfortunately, no. The Straight Talk Mobile Wi-Fi Hotspot requires its own proprietary plans as follows:

1 GB for $15 to be used within 30-days

2 GB for $25 to be used within 30-days

4 GB for $40 to be used within 60-days

5 GB for $50 to be used within 60-days

7 GB for $75 to be used within 60-days

how well does it work for streaming movies

It will stream ok but your Data card will shrivel up in no time within a few hours at the most. Compare it to the high cost of paying a taxi driver in NYC to go a mile or two. Expensive for what little you mileage you get.

It will work but being limited to 3G speeds, you could experience some pixelization and buffering lags. As you know, 3G is quite a bit slower than 4G LTE. Also, streaming a lot of movies will gobble up bandwidth quickly so if you plan on streaming movies frequently, be prepared to purchase a lot of service cards.

No, this card provides 4 GB and you have to use that 4 GB within 60-days. After 60-days, you lose any remaining data.

It's a whichever comes first situation. The card will expire when you've used 4 GB of data or when you've reached 60-days from the date of activating the card; whichever comes first.

MissMontana, the Straight Talk Mobile Hotspot will work anywhere that there is Verizon Wireless native 3G coverage. That includes all states except Alaska where there is no native Verizon coverage.

To see exactly where you'll have coverage, you can go to the Verizon street-level coverage map and put in the address or approximate location you wish to use the Hotspot. Choose the "Prepaid" button as that will show "native" voice and 3G coverage. Anywhere in the purple-shaded area is where this Hotspot should work.

There are two methods. One is through the UMX 192.168.1.1 status page and the other is through your account page at Straight Talk.

Here is the description on how to use each method (copy-and-paste):

This works only with the Straight Talk Hotspot and you first have to purchase the hotspot in order to use the service card featured on this page.

Here is the link for the page to see and order the hotspot ...it is currently selling for $79 at Walmart (copy-and-paste):

http://www.walmart.com/ip/Straight-Talk-WiFi-Mobile-HotSpot-3G/30824075

What the hotspot essentially does is to create a wifi signal for you to use with your chosen device whether it be your smartphone, tablet, laptop, desktop, iPad, etc. ...anything that can use wifi. You can have up to five devices connected at once. It's your own personal wifi signal and sometimes called MIFI so you can have internet access with you instead of relying on public or private wifi. This way, you don't have to use the wifi at the hotel, or Starbucks, or the airport, etc., etc.

It works independently from your personal cell phone but DOES use a cellular connection (Verizon Wireless --so you have to be in an area of Verizon cell coverage for this to function).

can i call to canada directly from my laptop?

First, you'd have to purchase the hotspot which is selling at Walmart for $79 (copy-and-paste):

http://www.walmart.com/ip/Straight-Talk-WiFi-Mobile-HotSpot-3G/30824075

Then you'd have to connect your laptop wirelessly by the way of the WiFi that the hotspot is providing.

You then could use a service such as Google Voice to make free calls to Canada from the U.S. from your laptop.

And, BTW, internet calls using 3G are not optimal. I've used this for making calls and there could be some interruptions depending what kind of quality the connection to the tower may be (weather, location, traffic congestion on the tower, etc. may all play a role in the quality of the connection).

Again, this card only supplies service to the Hotspot which first has to be purchased. The description does not make that clear.
