It depends on how old your laptop is. It's possible you only have 802.11b protocol, so this device, which uses 802.11g, would be better. You should also check the wireless transmitter (router or access point) to see if it also is merely 802.11b. Ideally, for it to be worth it for you to buy this device, your router is going to be 802.11g or even the newer 802.11n... and your laptop is older than a year or two and therefore doesn't have 802.11g. Check the specs of your laptop (online if you have to).

If your notebook already has wireless then there is no reason to add more wireless to it unless you're getting something better than what the notebook already has like Wireless 802.11n Dual-Band.

This Belkin does not do anything that a built in adapter does not already do.

An adapter like this would be a upgrade.

I want one myself ASAP, I only have 802.11b/g built in.

No, it doesn't need one. This adapter is plugged into one of the USB outlets on your computer. It looks a lot like a flash drive, very small.

Yes, My sister lives on the 1st floor and has windows xp on her laptop. I live on the second floor and I have a vista desktop it works beautiful, but I did wonder why it was working but lost its connection. I had to reinsert the disk and than go to my control panal, click device manager, then click rangemax and the computer found it. It has been working every since I love it.

As long as you have the correct drivers for the USB adapter it will work just fine. Just use the same connection information on her xp machine as you did for your vista.

It was plug-and-play when I attached it to my Ubuntu 10.04. At least, the answer is yes for this version of Linux. If you are using a different version of Linux, I don't know.

Question

Does this come with a disc or do I need to download a driver online before I can use it?

I have one of these that a friend gave me but he didn't have a disc that went with it. I plugged it into my computer but it didn't do anything and said it needed a driver. The problem is, I run off my land lords internet (approved by him lol) but my husbands desktop does not have wireless capability. So he needs something he can plug into his computer that comes with an installation disc.
