UPDATE on my previous comments. I put a Samsung LN52B750 on this stand and decided not to modify the shelf height because of the weight. The center channel speaker ended up on the middle second shelf and the sound is just fine.

The distance from very top shelf to the one below it is a very snug 5 inches. The width is a little bigger than 19 1/2 inches. My center channel speaker is 6 inches high and I would like to use it there instead of in the shelf area below that. Right now I'm shopping around for an inexpensive 5 inch center speaker (any ideas out there?) or thinking of adding 4 strips of black finished wood 2 1/2 inches by about 16 1/2 inches to the underside of that top shelf to extend the height. - Note some drilling and additional screws required and integrity of the top shelf is on your craftsmanship.

Top piece detachable?

Is it possible to not attach the top piece to the stand (if so, would the surface be flush)? Also, is it possible to fit a PS3in standing (vertical) position in one of the shelves?

Don't forget that without the very top piece installed there would be 8 holes that would be visible.

Yes, if it is a slim profile and you do not attach the top piece. The top part barely holds our 46" with about two inches or overhang on each side.

i would have to say no. We have a 42" and it just sits at the edges of the top shelf. If you dont mind it hanging over the top shelf it might work, but I wouldnt say it would be sturdy

This is very sturdy but only 60" wide so your TV will extend beyond the furniture stand itself. The top shelf measures 39x17. Your stand will have to sit comfortably on it to support the TV.

I have a 50" samsung plasma TV on the top shelf and it fits perfectly. You'll just have to make sure the TV base fits on the shelf, which is quite long. You should have no problem.

The height between the long top and the shorter upper top is exactly 5 in. It will easily accomodate 17" both ways in the center sections. Center shelf in the bottom is adjustable to the height you need.
