This advertises as a 4 inch memory foam - but is actually 1.5 memory and 2.5 high density foam. What is the difference in the two foams ?

No, it just means you don't feel any significant pressure points when you lay down on this topper...like an old mattress where you feel the lumps and bumps, you don't feel anything like that on this topper.

The problem I had is that it tends to shift. But, if you are able to fit a sheet or cover around the mattress and topper to keep it in place, it would work just fine.

Will this foam mattress work on a sofa bed (either as the sofa mattress or will it fold into the frame with a thin sofa mattress)?

Before buying a $300-$400 queen sofa bed mattress that I would sleep on, I'm trying to make the sofa bed that I have more comfortable for guests. I think this foam mattress will work, but I don't know if I'll have to keep pulling it out or if it can fold down into the frame with what I consider a thin sofa bed mattress.

I used to sleep on a sofa sleeper. Personnally I think this will do what you want it to. Although I would throw out the mattress that you have and use the topper alone. It is that comfortable.
