You will need both. Once you enter the passcode on the keypad, you have about 5 seconds to turn the key before the lights reset. I put the key in and get ready, then enter the code so I can turn the key right away. The key will not turn without the passcode. After the lights go out you can lock it, but you will need to re-enter the code if you want to open it again. You pick the code, and it can be anywhere from 1 to 8 digits long. Setting or changing the code is simple. You can always by-pass the code with the master-key (for dead batteries, or forgotten code). They supply 2 regular keys, and one master key.
