Both the Component cables & HDMI cable CAN display 1080i-(Interlaced) & 1080p-(Progressive Scan), the difference is that the Component cable is an Analog cable, whether you're using 1080i or 1080p the signal WILL be Analog, the HDMI cable is a Digital cable, whether you're using 1080i 0r 1080p, the signal WILL be Digital. The HDMI cable would display the higher quality picture, because it's Digital & not Analog, the difference in picture quality may not be the significant when comparing a Component hook-up in 1080p to an HDMI hook-up in 1080p, but there WILL be a difference, because even if the resolution is the same & both signals are in Progressive Scan, the Digital signal that the HDMI cable delivers is a higher quality signal than the Analog signal that the Component cable delivers. In the end, both Component cables & HDMI cables are an excellent hook-up for picture quality, Component is the best Analog signal you can use, & HDMI is the best Digital signal you can use, but long story short, the HDMI cable WILL give the higher picture quality because it's Digital, & Digital is higher quality than Analog.

This cable sends 1080i (i = interlaced scan) vs. 1080p (p = progressive scan). Well, it claims 1080p with an asterisked caveat, but I can't find what that is. (My understanding is that, unless HDMI is used, the PS3 may DOWNCOVERT 1080p, but _not_ 1080i. This is a consequence of the HDMI standard.)

Meanwhile, what's the diff? For 1080i, this means that 540 lines are displayed in an alternating fashion on your display, like so.

---------------------
++++++++++++
---------------------
++++++++++++

With 1080p, all 1080 lines are displayed in one shot, from top to bottom:

++++++++++++
++++++++++++
++++++++++++
++++++++++++

So which is better? That is the subject of much debate on the internets. :)

Ultimately, let your eyes be your guide! Also, make sure you have calibrated your set (especially if it's rear projection - worth every penny, I promise).

Meanwhile, here's one POV on the i-vs-p thing:

These cables will work with the PS2, the PS3, & even the original PS1, all PS systems use the same Audio/Video output adapter.

It works great with PS2 cause it is designed to be used with both PS2 and PS3. Typically PS3 users will use HDMI to hook up to a high def tv but if your tv doesn't have HDMI inputs then this is a good alternative. I would say that this is geared more toward the PS2 user because there is no other option for connecting a PS2 to a high def tv other than the original cables. The original cables are not designed for high def though.
