Does the heating element run just around the edges or does it wind through out the surface to heat evenly?

The heating element runs in a rectangle approx. 3" in from the perimeter of the edge. I know this because ours burned out. We are replacing our unit with one identical because we LOVE this grill and use it several times a day.

The actual cooking surface is shaped as a rounded trapezoid. Taking that into consideration, the top actual grilling surface measurement is ~16.5", bottom ~18.5", and depth is ~15". That's about 262.5 sq in.
