It clearly was not made for grass or dirt but it can be used, just does not go that fast.

My son will be 3 at the end of April. He's currently around 40 pounds and at least 3 feet tall. I wonder if this bike is big enough.

My son just turned 3 (and 3 feet tall) & his feet don't reach the peddles just yet BUT he uses this feet to push himself around and seems to LOVE it. It's a GREAT buy. Both my kids love it! (my 3 & 5 year old). It's going to last us for a good long time!

No - My grandson is 3. Also after the bike was assembled we put our 15 month old grandson on it. His legs are a little too short but the seating area was accommodating and safe for his age and body. FYI - For her second birthday, we bought a Big Wheel (not the Flyer) for my daughter she loved it and that is why we purchased the Flyer for her son.

The specifications do not say anything about brakes, but I wanted to know the kids would get a good spin out without them.

It does not have brakes, but yes you can get a great spin out going down hill on a concrete driveway or pavement, even gravel. Plus, they do NOT flip over no matter how fast they go flying downhill...at least my boys haven't flipped them over yet. I do require helmets to be worn when riding.
