You should definately check out, "Hotel Dusk, Room 215." I just picked it up for the DS for Christmas and LOVE IT!!!

It is full of mystery, investigating, puzzles, etc...

I almost picked up "Professor Layton" and may still, but that 3 wolf and chicks puzzle still baffles me, on the website demo.

I do think that this game would be too challenging for a 7 year old but I would suggest Scribblenauts as a fun game for a 7 year old.
