I don't know what makes them break-proof. Personally, I dare not to try, even though I once droped it whie I was doing dishes. The floor was laminate and I was surprised that I didn't break into pieces.
Anyways, They are microwave safe.

I don't believe they're 100% break-proof. They don't break as easily as other dishes but I do believe it's a possibility they could break. I've used them in the microwave with no difficulty.

The material was first invented for jet windshields, which is why they are so durable, and I have used the dishes many times in the microwave...It is also recommended micro-wave safe in the packaging materials.

The plates are made of a product called vitrelle that is a glass-like ceramic. The vitrelle plates I have owned for over 20 years are all intact with no chips, scratches, or cracks. My kids have dropped them on the floor and broken the floor tiles, but not the dishes. I don't think you could break one if you tried.
The only drawback is the newer Corelle plates don't stack as neatly as the older ones. They have slightly warped edges. Corning denies there is any change in quality, but I disagree. However, even the new ones are virtually indestructable.

Hello, I bought a double set 3 years ago and they are still in great shape. The plates are all perfect sizes as are the cups. Unless you want jumbo size, I dont know to tell you,lol :~) You would have to search to see how they are breakproof. Everything breaks, but I havent had any of mine brake as of the years I have ever owned Corelle. They are the best! In the microwave they re great, but as with everthing use gloves or mits to remove as plates get hot in high temps. I recommend for everyone especially children use also!
