Questions & Answers for Spa Sensations Spa Sensations 12" Theratouch Memory Foam Mattress, Queen

Question

Good with platform bed?

Does it need a box spring or foundation of any kind? Or will a platform bed be enough? It just has a wood base for the mattress to sit on.

The platform should be fine as long as the entire mattress is supported it's the same concept as my RV

Memory foam mattresses as a group work very well without a box spring, just bare atop a platform bed. I use mine with a box spring so that it won't be too low but like I said, it would be fine without it. Unlike a regular mattress, the memory foam mattress does not depend on a secondary set of springs.

I have a box spring because it was free. If I didn't have it I would have bouth the frame for this mattress also. The box spring is more than the frame walmart.com sales that is why i would have bought the frame.

Question

Do we need any special type of mattress board? I am planning to replace my old mattress with this using the old mattress board that is perfectly good.

I am thinking of putting this mattress on the old mattress board that is good and has a flat surface. Would that be Ok? Thanks for an answer.

Sure, that'll work. Memory foam mattresses as a class work on a platform and do not require box springs. I ended up buying a box springs just for the added height it gave but not because I needed it. You'll be fine.

It will work with our without a mattress board. If you use a regular bed you will need a mattress board or you can use a platform bed. On a regular bed I would not suggest using the mattress without a Mattress Board.

not that i can see. i used my box springs and headboard and it is great.
you might want to get some of the slide
proof material to put under the mattress
because it does have a tendance to move when you get in the bed.

As long as it is sturdy and flat any surface would work. There is 12 inches of foam between you and the board.

As long as it is a good sturdy surface, I think it would work fine. We are using our old mattress base that is like new, and have had no issues.

It would be just fine to use an old box spring or board under this mattress for added support. I ordered the 'curtis tufted bed' along with this mattress which came with 3 slats. I had a board cut at home depot for more flat support.

No. You have to supply your own box spring. Either use your old one or you can do like I did and buy a new one. I bought mine at Big Lots for $130.00.

No. You will have to get a foundation for this mattress. Wal-Mart does sell and base for this mattress. http://www.walmart.com/ip/Slumber-1-Spa-Sensations-Smart-Base-Bed-Frame-Black/15739165
I bought it and it does work very well. A normal box spring will not work well as the memory foam will sink into the gaps in the slats.

All memory foam mattresses supposedly have a "new" smell to them that some folks do not like. So, the manufacturers encourage you to wait 48 hours after taking it out of the plastic packaging so the smell with dissipate. I personally didn't smell anything so I slept on it 4 hours after taking it out of the packaging and it was fine... and continues to be.

We did not wait 48 hrs to sleep on it. Because it comes compressed in a box it has to regain its normal shape and inflate. The mattress does have a strong odor once out of the box. So that is why it may say to wait. We slept on it an hour after taking out of box.

It came shrink-wrapped, vacuum-sealed and rolled up. It was almost exactly the size of a hot water heater. It just barely fit in the back seat of my 4-door Hyundai Sonata but it did. I brought it home and carried up it a flight of stairs by myself, but I wouldn't do that again. Get someone to help.

Question

How many different types of foam layers are there?

The description states 3 but also states brochure included with this item may not reflect the current product specifications. There are two diagrames shown, one shows 2 layers and one shows 3 layers. This is an extremely important factor in my decision making process.

Question

Does this mattress have any toxic off-gassing?

I'm looking for a memory foam mattress that does not have any toxic off-gassing. That means no VOCs and no toxic chemicals used in manufacturing the foam. Does this mattress meet that criteria? I see that this Spa Sensation mattress has green tea, charcoal and natural oils in the foam. Does that mean it's not made from toxic petroleum products and other fireproofing chemicals? Thanks.

There was a strong chemical odor that completely faded within a couple of days after we aired it out. We didn't use the mattress for the first couple of days due to the strong odor. It doesn't have an odor anymore, though.

I wouldn't know anything about the manufacturing process or if petroleum products were used.

43"x22"x21" is the size of the cardboard box that the roll comes in. It just barely fit in the back seat of my Nissan Altima. I brought my little fold up dolly with me so I could unload it myself and wheel it into the house.
