If your seats fold down. probably. It's a large flat box. ( a few inches bigger than the dimensions of the "table top" and approx. 8 in. tall.)

I think you might be able to get away with it. It is a very stable sturdy piece. I have 46" and wish I had a 50" to put on there.

I have a 42 inch wide screen that fits very comfortably. I think 50 may push it. You also need to think about the weight. Depending whether it's LCD or plasma may make the differance.

How many shelves have opening on the back for component cords, cables for cord management, to plug into outlets?

I have 4 components (DVD player, CD player, Surround sound for speakers, etc.) to connect to electrical outlets and need 4 shelves that have openings on the back of the cabinet.

Only the top center shelf has an opening, but you can run cords up to that hole from the bottom center shelf. And for the cabinets, you could easily drill out your own holes.

Can I remove the manufacturer's knobs and install my own?

From what I have seen, the knobs just screw in from the front. Would be curious if anyone has replaced them easily.

You can replace the knobs. The knobs on these units do not screw all the way through the doors as you've noted. The screw into the doors from the front only. I have found that you can remove the screws from the knobs that come with the furniture to use in the knobs you purchase. If you're feeling ultra DIY, you could drill holes and install handle type pulls too. I am happy with the hardware as is, but maybe once I've owned the furniture a while, I'll hack it.

Yes it definitly leans towards solid wood. It does not look like compressed cardboard at all. It is pretty heavy and the color makes it look very elegant.

We have a 42" plasma tv and it fits perfectly, I would check the wieght limit on the product to insure that your expensive TV does not get broken.

depending on the model it might be a bit heavy. I would be afraid to put my 32" Sony Trinitron on it but the sony is a heavy bugger. The stand is rated for 95 pounds.

The shelf is adjustable - pre-drilled with 3 height options.

There is a hold cut in the back to run wires as well.
