The $349 Expressions machine handles papers twice the size of the smaller, portable unit - you can use 24 x 24, as well as anything smaller in this unit. It's also frankly a little faster than the smaller unit, but they both have their advantages. The first Cricut requires a much smaller footprint than the Expressions-nobody will ever mistake it for portable, but it does give you more flexibility in setting up your designs and controlling their size.

I presently own the smaller cricut and plan to purchase the larger one hopefully this weekend!! I love having the smaller one for taking with me to crops (I scrapbook) and I will have my larger one set up at a permanent place in my scrap room. The more expensive machine will cut images/letters from 1/4 inch up to 23 1/2 inches where the smaller one goes from 1/2 to 5 1/2 inches so you have more variety there. Also, with the larger machine you get two cartridges you cannot get anywhere else. They are only available with the machine. If you craft in any way that requires cutting out letters or images, this is the way to go. You will be ready to sell all your other diecut machines once you use this! I know I love mine!
