Yes. This carseat can be installed with the lapbelt only
IF the child is at least 1yr old, between 20-65lbs and between 27"-52".
If the child is smaller, you need a rear-facing seat.
If the child is larger, you need a booster, and a booster requires the shoulder belt.

answer 2
YES and NO
YES -- you MAY use a lap-only belt if the you are using the seat in HARNESSED MODE
NO -- you may NOT use a lap-only belt for either booster mode (high-back or backless), you must have a lap-shoulder combo to use a non-harnessing booster seat

Question

Is this product rear facing approved?

The state i live in wants my 9 month old son to stay in a rear facing car seat until he is 2yrs old and if i get pulled over or if the state some how find out that he's under 2 n in a front facing seat i could get in alot of trouble with the law. But my son is currently 22lb & 30in long n is to big for his rear facing seat and God only knows how big he'll be by the time his 1st birthday let alone is 2nd. Plus i REALLY dont want to buy a bigger rear face car seat when im just gonna buy a front face seat in a year from now.

No this car seat is not approved for rear facing. There are car seats similar to this one that are approved for rear facing so that you won't have to buy another one. There are studies to show that an infant should remain rear faced until at least 2 yrs of age and in some countries that's the law. One product is the Graco My ride 65. Hope this helps.

I'm not sure what state you live in but I couldn't find one that has a law that a child MUST be in a rear facing car seat until after their 2nd birthday. It's a recommendation but not a law. I'd dbl check with your local pd. To answer your question, no this car seat is not a rear facing car seat.

This is only a forward facing seat. Your 9 month old should still rear face.(most states they must rear face till 1 AND 20lbs) You should look at a convertible car seat this way you can keep him rear facing till 2 or 40lbs(I say 40 cause allot of the convertible seats go to that weight. If he reaches 2 before 40 then if you want you can turn him forward(it is safest rear facing) and keep him in that seat till he reaches the weight limit. I had something like this one just different print. http://www.walmart.com/ip/Cosco-Scenera-Convertible-Car-Seat-Marianne/20753140

This is not a rear facing carseat. Usually states have a weight/height requirement in addition to age. Your son might meet the size requirement to use a forward facing seat. My state is the same way, but it is one year old and/or 21 lbs. My children meet the weight, but not the age. Both of them were in forward facing seats before one year old. However, this is a wonderful seat to buy when you do get a forward facing seat.

There has never been a documented case of child breaking their leg from rear facing and having their feet touch the seat. There are many cases of broken necks from forward facing a child that is too young - under 2 years old and 35 lbs.

I would definitely wait till over age 2. Ideally, your child should remain rear facing as long as possible and this is a forward facing only seat.
For those that said their child's seat touch the back seat, just have them sit "indian style", they would be much more comfortable and still remain safest possible. I know it sounds odd, but there are 3 and 4 yr olds still rear facing by sitting this way.
To the Original poster, just get your son a convertible for now with a high weight limit for rear facing, there are some that go over 30 lbs now. Then when THAT seat is outgrown, you can forward face your son in the Nautilus safely.

That's the same problem I have my son is long and has completely outgrown his seat that was supposed to be good up to 26 lbs. He's 23lbs. and his feet rest on the seat of the car to the point that he has to bend his knees in his seat, I dont feel safe with him sitting like that. But at the same time everyone says to wait, I'm confused.

I would NOT use this seat for any 1 yr old. It is safest to keep your baby rear facing for as long as possible. There are many seats on the market that are a better fit for a small child. RF to 33-35lbs is safest. Look up rear facing viedos on you tube. Fet on the back of the seat are ok. He just needs a convertable. Check out the trufit.

Children should remain rear facing for as long as possible. This is not a convertible seat (that goes either forward or rear facing) it only goes forward facing. Your baby is at higher risk for injury once they are turned forward facing. The AAP now recommends that children stay rear facing until at least 2 years old or to the weight limits of a convertible seat. This is a great seat but I would not use it for a child under 2. I bought it for my 4 year old and we love it but don't rush it! Every step "up" in a car seat is a step down in safety. Instead of this seat for a child under 2 try the Evenflo Triumph Advance instead. For about the same price you can keep your child rear facing longer and then turn him forward facing when he reaches the weight limit of the seat for rear facing. You will find all of that information in the car seat manual.

It's not a 1 year old OR 20 lbs... its recommended that infants should always ride rear-facing until they are at least 1 year of age AND weigh at least 20 pounds.

For the infants I recommend the Cosco Scenera that still allows you to rear face and has the same base structure as the pricier Britax Marathon

Ok, so I've got the clarification. All infants under 1 years old no matter the weight need to be in a rear facing seat. This car seat does not rear face so it will not work until your baby is 1 years old.

The reason is something called internal decapitation. Look it up, not something to mess around with. Rear facing children are 5 times safer than their forward facing peers.

The way my pediatrician explained it is a baby's neck and back muscles are not fully developed until closer to 2 years of age. If you forward face to early and are in a wreck or start/stop to suddenly you run the risk of whiplash and/or spinal cord and/or brain injury.

This is not a rear facing seat and you are putting your child's life in danger if you were to be in a accident. Children must be rear facing until 12 months and should be rear facing as long as possible. There is more than weight & height that makes a child ready for a car seat and there are tons of books & articles written that explain this better than I can. Look into getting a convertible seat.
