It hasn't produced smoke for us. I think it is because the highest setting, #5 doesn't get "smoky hot". It does cook a nice thick steak, but you can't get the crispy black on it that some people like. So, I don't think it gets hot enough to smoke, unless the product you cook gets smoky. The instructions nor the grill say what the 1 thru 5 are in degrees. I wish I knew that one too. But I like it a lot, for inside cooking, except the grill doesn't come off and it's a little large for the kitchen sink. You can wash it in the sink though.
