Once you program the remote to control your tv, you can use the volume buttons on the remote, but if you loose the remote, you would then have to use the buttons on the box to change channels and the buttons on the TV to change volume. On the remote that comes with this unit. The darker grey buttons control TV functions once the remote is programmed for your TV and the lighter colored buttons onctrol the converter box functions.

Yes, if you currently use an antenna to receive tv signals (not using cable or sattelite pay tv), then you will still need your antenna with the new converter box.

if you have the B version, it should have analog passthough. You have to place the box in Standby mode for that though. also, you may need to upgrade your antenna in order to receive digital channels. check antennaweb.org to get an idea of what you should be able to pull in. I had to put up a large arial and hook up 2 signal boosters back to back to get all the channels for my area. I spent about $350 for that part.

It’s possible that you currently have less digital stations available in your region. You can check how many are available by using this website: www.antennaweb.org . Also suggest adjusting your antenna – the frequencies of the digital stations may be quite different from analog stations.

Is a battery pack available?

There is no battery pack available for this, however you can purchase a small "Power Inverter", that converts the power from a 12 volt DC battery to 110 AC to run the DTA 800, or any of the other Digital Converters, for about $25 to $30. These inverters are commonly used to run laptop computers and other electronic devices from a vehicle. Just first check the wattage draw listed on the label of most electronics, or in it's paperwork, and be sure that you purchase an inverter with approximately 30 percent higher rating than the actual wattage that the Digital Converter runs on. I hope this information helps you.

Curious does anyone have input on the Magnavox converter box...local Wal-Mart only has this type now. Also what would be the best antenna to buy?

Both are rated quite similarly, with the Magnavox slightly better for performance, but . . . RCA has two features that the Magnavox does not: universal remote and analog pass through (for channels that have yet to convert).

You also might want to check to see if there is more than one code that is listed for your brand of TV and try them all to see if a different code will give you access to more functions.

Assuming the converter boxes' remote is programmed correctly, If you cannot turn on your tv then the converter boxes remote is not compatible with your tv. You will have to use both remotes unless you are willing to buy a programmable remote.

GeoSam's answer isn't completely correct. You need to make sure your HDTV has an ATSC tuner in it. If it does, you will be alright as this is the digital tuner needed to pick up DTV and HDTV signals.
If you have an older HDTV (like one of the two I have), it may be labeled HDTV monitor, HD ready or something like that. If that is the case, the tv may not have a digital tuner on-board. In that case, you will need a convertor box to change the signal from analog to digital. You will need to check your owner's manual or "Google" the manufacturer and model number to find out which tuner you have. Good luck! Everything is better in HD!

Question

Does this work on any TV's regardless of how old it is?

Yes, it should work on any TV, regardless of how old it is. It's easy to connect it to any TV that has a standard COAX connection (typically labelled "ANTENNA IN" or "RF IN"), it also works with any TV that has an AV Input (RCA jacks). If the TV is REALLY REALLY OLD, it might have two screw connections (300 ohm connection), instead of COAX. Even in this case, it's easy to find a cheap 300ohm-to-COAX adapter (should be under $10), that you can use to connect the old TV to your converter. Again, this only applies to REALLY OLD TV's (very few around - most old TV's that are still operating, have COAX)

answer 2
Converter box should work fine with your Magnavox. Simply make connection between OUTPUT TO TV on the converter, and the Antenna IN on the TV, using the COAX cable supplied with converter box. Connect your old antenna to the ANTENNA IN on the converter box. The converter box will output signal on either channel 3 or channel 4 - you select which channel, with switch on back of converter. Make sure your TV is then tuned to the same channel (3 or 4). Detailed instructions in instruction book (you can download it at www.1800customersupport.com/RCA )
