You also might want to check to see if there is more than one code that is listed for your brand of TV and try them all to see if a different code will give you access to more functions.

Assuming the converter boxes' remote is programmed correctly, If you cannot turn on your tv then the converter boxes remote is not compatible with your tv. You will have to use both remotes unless you are willing to buy a programmable remote.

GeoSam's answer isn't completely correct. You need to make sure your HDTV has an ATSC tuner in it. If it does, you will be alright as this is the digital tuner needed to pick up DTV and HDTV signals.
If you have an older HDTV (like one of the two I have), it may be labeled HDTV monitor, HD ready or something like that. If that is the case, the tv may not have a digital tuner on-board. In that case, you will need a convertor box to change the signal from analog to digital. You will need to check your owner's manual or "Google" the manufacturer and model number to find out which tuner you have. Good luck! Everything is better in HD!

Question

Does this work on any TV's regardless of how old it is?

I have a Magnavox with the only outlet being for an antenna. Will the box work on this?

Yes, it should work on any TV, regardless of how old it is. It's easy to connect it to any TV that has a standard COAX connection (typically labelled "ANTENNA IN" or "RF IN"), it also works with any TV that has an AV Input (RCA jacks). If the TV is REALLY REALLY OLD, it might have two screw connections (300 ohm connection), instead of COAX. Even in this case, it's easy to find a cheap 300ohm-to-COAX adapter (should be under $10), that you can use to connect the old TV to your converter. Again, this only applies to REALLY OLD TV's (very few around - most old TV's that are still operating, have COAX)

Converter box should work fine with your Magnavox. Simply make connection between OUTPUT TO TV on the converter, and the Antenna IN on the TV, using the COAX cable supplied with converter box. Connect your old antenna to the ANTENNA IN on the converter box. The converter box will output signal on either channel 3 or channel 4 - you select which channel, with switch on back of converter. Make sure your TV is then tuned to the same channel (3 or 4). Detailed instructions in instruction book (you can download it at www.1800customersupport.com/RCA )

Both are rated quite similarly, with the Magnavox slightly better for performance, but . . . RCA has two features that the Magnavox does not: universal remote and analog pass through (for channels that have yet to convert).

I have sucessfully programed 4 different models of universal remotes to control these converter boxes with the cable/satellite button. The only down side is that I have to switch between cable/satellite to turn on the converter and change channels and TV to turn on the tv and adjust volume.

Not being familiar with DVR's, I'm not sure if they work without a source such as cable or satellite. Presuming they work without that type of input, you'll still need an antenna of some sort to be connected. The converter alone even without a DVR will require an antenna, even if it's nothing but rabbit ears.

If you do not use the cable from your wall to get a clear picture (before using the converter box) yes you will need an antenna. Some digital or flat screen televisions will pick up channels but even then you will get more channels and better reception with an antennea.

Yes, you still need a digital antenna. We found that the small indoor antennas do not work in our area. So we will get a larger one that mounts in the attic. Also make sure to get one that is UHF/VHF.

Question

Which digital converter box do I need?

I have a couple of different analog tvs at my house and I do not have dish or cable. I have an antenna with a signal booster from Radio Shack that I use. I see some boxes have coaxial, composite video outputs, s video and a smart antenna connection. Which of these do I need and does Walmart have it. I think that our store has Magnavox converters.

Any brand of converter box should work with any brand of TV. Converter boxes have , at least, a COAX connection, and a “Composite” (RCA-type connector) connection. Every TV should have, at least, a COAX connection (typically used for connecting an antenna), the vast majority will also have a Composite connection (might be called “AV-IN”).
Some very (very!) old TV’s might not have a COAX connection, but have a 300 ohm connection instead (connection will look like two screws) - in this case you’d need to use a special converter (often called a “balun” or “transformer”) which mates the 300 ohm connection to a coax connection, this little converter can be bought cheaply at many electronics retailers. Again, vast, vast majority of TV’s will have a COAX connection anyway, so for vast, vast majority, no need to use a “balun”. Chances are, if you happen to have a very, very old TV with 300 ohm connection only, you’re already using a “balun” to connect the TV to your antenna, which uses a COAX connection – just connect this “balun” to your Converter Box instead of your antenna.
