Curious does anyone have input on the Magnavox converter box...local Wal-Mart only has this type now. Also what would be the best antenna to buy?

Both are rated quite similarly, with the Magnavox slightly better for performance, but . . . RCA has two features that the Magnavox does not: universal remote and analog pass through (for channels that have yet to convert).

If your dvr has a digital tuner already built in, do not use the converter box with it.

Not being familiar with DVR's, I'm not sure if they work without a source such as cable or satellite. Presuming they work without that type of input, you'll still need an antenna of some sort to be connected. The converter alone even without a DVR will require an antenna, even if it's nothing but rabbit ears.

if you have the B version, it should have analog passthough. You have to place the box in Standby mode for that though. also, you may need to upgrade your antenna in order to receive digital channels. check antennaweb.org to get an idea of what you should be able to pull in. I had to put up a large arial and hook up 2 signal boosters back to back to get all the channels for my area. I spent about $350 for that part.

It’s possible that you currently have less digital stations available in your region. You can check how many are available by using this website: www.antennaweb.org . Also suggest adjusting your antenna – the frequencies of the digital stations may be quite different from analog stations.

Is a battery pack available?

There is no battery pack available for this, however you can purchase a small "Power Inverter", that converts the power from a 12 volt DC battery to 110 AC to run the DTA 800, or any of the other Digital Converters, for about $25 to $30. These inverters are commonly used to run laptop computers and other electronic devices from a vehicle. Just first check the wattage draw listed on the label of most electronics, or in it's paperwork, and be sure that you purchase an inverter with approximately 30 percent higher rating than the actual wattage that the Digital Converter runs on. I hope this information helps you.

I have sucessfully programed 4 different models of universal remotes to control these converter boxes with the cable/satellite button. The only down side is that I have to switch between cable/satellite to turn on the converter and change channels and TV to turn on the tv and adjust volume.

First, try hooking it up directly to your TV and make sure you have the input set correctly on the tv. Then make sure the light on the box changes from yellow to green. Surprisingly, it can be hard to tell. Then go into the menu and scan for channels.

Try taking the VCR out of the mix to see if that works. If not, the box may be defective.

A Signal Pass Box is needed in order to keep your home from becoming an illegal Television Station. If you have a VCR or Audio Video Stereo then use a splitter to split your TV Antenna into both the TV and the Converter box and use your RCA connections to go to the VCR or Audio Video Stereo system so you can watch your HDTV programming.

bring your coupon to the Wal-Mart store at time of purchase. The $40 will be instantly deducted from the price of the converter box (it currently sells for under $50), thus your out-of-pocket expense would be under $10.
In other words, you'll pay under $10, rather than paying full price, then getting refund of $40.
