Question
Extra cable fees ?
Do you know if the cable companies charge any extra fees for using a Tivo ?

yes & no.

There is no charge simply for using a TIVO.

Previous TIVO's were designed to work with the cable box, but TIVO HD is designed to replace the cable box.

If you just want to receive & record basic cable -- as if you connected the cable to the TV directly, there is no charge.

If you want the TIVO to tune in the additional channels which require a cable box, you will need to get the cable company to install one or more cable cards. This cost about $45 insallation and $2.50/mo/card. This was written 02/01/09 and I have time warner cable. The card will allow descrabbling of most cable channels.
This normally includes extended cable over channel 70, digital cable channels, and broadcast services you pay for like HBO or SHOWTIME. The normal cable service charges still apply.

The current TIVO HD was as advanced as they could design it at the time, but it does not do two way cable communications. Therefore, it can not do on-demand, most pay-per-view services, or any channel which the cable company only broadcast when someone is watching it. Italso does not support cable games or any of the cable feed-back systems. The cable compnies have been working on a design agreement to covrer these in the future.

TIVO can work with a high speed internet connection (not included) to allow you to download movies from a netflix or amazon u-box account.

Your Cable company will probably charge a small fee for the CableCard(s). Usually 1.99 each. You will need two in order to record one show while watching another.

However! you must have Tivo Service for this unit to work. Go here for Tivo Service https://www3.tivo.com/store/plans.do

Yes, simply connect you antenna to the back of the Tivo where it says "antenna." Tivo will scan for available channels and add information that will make it look like you have cable.

Yes, this TiVo will work with your antenna. I don't know if that is true for the non-HD TiVos, but this one will work with only an antenna connection.

Comcast does offer cable cards, they have a page on their site about it. By law all cable companies have to offer cable cards.

TiVo works with any cable company. If your cable company uses switched digital video (SDV) to deliver more channels you will need to get an additional special box from your cable company to be able to access those channels.

Question
I have a powered antenna (only) to receive my local HD signals....No cable, dish, etc., just antenna.
My question -- If I buy this TIVO, can I use it to capture and record my over the air HD TV signals WITHOUT paying a monthly/yearly subscription fee to TIVO? (I don't watch much TV and am only interested in receiving and recording my local stations in HD.) And I don't want to add extra on-going fees if I don't have to. Thanks!

MY tivo works just fine with an antenna, it loads the information for the program directory for local stations from the internet or phone. We did have to purchase an adaptor from tivo to have it download program updates from our family's wireless internet. You'll love the way the TIVO will record your favorites and even suggest programs!

Your TIVO will work fine with just antenna or basic cable. When setting it up you will have to tell it what city's cable system you are using. It will then download all of your channel's program information.

If you install two single cable cards or one multi cable card, you can. You need to get the cable cards from your cable provider.

yes, you can, I have a series 2, and dish network, you have to have the reciever plugged in to the tv that is on cahnnel 3, we have 2 seperate recievers, one is channel 3 and one channel 60, so I just have to have my Tivo in the room where the tv is set on 3, and Tivo has directions on how to hook up from there, it's not to complicated.

Yes, you can watch Netflix instant movies on this. You have to add movies to your queue on your computer (or with an iPhone app like iPhlix)--you cannot add movies to your queue through the TiVo box. Once a movie is in your instant view queue it shows up in your Now Playing list.
