I use it in saltwater weekly. Just make sure to GENTLY rinse it off with a freshwater hose as soon as possible after you get home. And rinse the rod from tip down as well. This is true even for those reels that are touted as "saltwater reels." My experience tells me I can use any reel in saltwater if I rinse it down, let it air dry, and oil/grease it occasionally.

This reel is a little big and heavy for continous csating and retrieving. Weighs about a pound. Should be great for live bait.

I often use this reel for lure fishing for 20-25-inch trout, and it's as good as anything I have. Just because it's a baitfeeder doesn't mean it can't cast and retrieve a lure just fine. I've never had a bird nest with the ABF40 even after repeated casts at different distances. I would recommend a good 30-to-50 lb braid with Yozuki pink flouro leader, but if you want, just go with 12-lb mono and have some fun!

Yes it will. I fish for catfish in tx and I have landed as large as 25lbs. with my 40 series reels. Using the bait feeder with live bait will allow you to give the fish time to adjust the bait in it's mouth before you set the hook. If your not interested in the bait feeder feature, there is also a model that does NOT have it.

Not sure what others use it for, but it works great for using live bait. When you engage the bait feeder it lets the bait run alittle, when you hear it speed up click it over and it sets the hook. Works great for gar because you have to let them chew on it for a while to hook em.

The feature switches between a light rear drag and the hard front drag. It works great when a trout takes the bait and runs, let it run for a bit, flip the switch and the front drag takes over. Works great.

This feature is a seperate drag on the bottom of the reel that allows you to flip this button and it allows your spool of line to be pulled freely. This is good for fishing with live bait or if you just want the fish to feel NO tension. When you have a fish that takes your bait you simply flit the switch back down and the reel works normally again. This is an amazing feature. I will not use another reel without this feature ever again.

answer 5
The auto trip bait feeding function allows you to use a live bait and let it swim or just hang out there without any tension on the line. Once a fish picks the bait up it can run with it with a small amount of tension (which you can adjust) until your ready to set the hook. When your ready the bait feeding function lets you then turn the handle about a 1/4 to 1/2 turn and it then automatically stops the spooling and allows you to set the hook. Similar to the way a baitcaster reel works but now the same function on a spinning reel.

It is too big unless you are going to catch a big lake trout. The ABF 30 is probably a better choice. It holds about 300yds of 4-6lb line.
